Note: Out-of-straightness is ordinarily checked at points of maximum deviation (as determined by line-of-sight observation) by means of a three-front straightedge and feeler gages. When overall straightness in entire length is of concern, the tube is rolled on a surface-plate and maximum deviation-from-straight is determined by means of feeler gages inserted between the tube and plate at point of maximum departure. If rotational methods such as chucking the tubs at its ends or supporting the ends on rollers and rotating under a dial indicator are used, extreme care in interpreting results must be employed because readings are influenced by OD dimensional variation in addition to deviation-from-straight. Not applicable to quenched and tempered tubes over 302 BHN. |

Tabulated tolerances can be applied simultaneously to only two of three dimensions, i.e., ODxWall or IDxWall. ID Tolerances apply only to tube specified ODxID or IDxWall...and to dimensions 0.625" and over when ID is at least half the OD. Wall thickness less than 3% of OD, require added ovality tolerances of plus and minus 1/2% of mean OD. If water quench and temper is required or specified-refer to Mill for applicable tolerance. |

over 51/2" | ±1% | over 6" to 8" inclusive | 100" |
Tolerances include allowance for convexity or concavity. For rectangular sections, the tolerance calculated for the larger flat dimension shall also apply to the smaller flat dimension. This tolerance may be increased 50 percent when applied to the smaller dimension, if the ratio of cross sectional dimension is between 1.5 and 3, and 100 percent when the ratio exceeds 3. | over 8" | 112" | |
Straightness: Permissable variation shall be 1/8" times the number of feet of total length divided by 5: | |||
.125" x (total length) ÷ 5 | |||
Wall Thickness: | Squareness of Sides: | ||
Maximum allowable variation | ±10% | Adjacent sides may deviate from 90° by a tolerance of plus or minus 2 degrees maximum. | |
(wall thickness is to be measured at the center of the flat, exclusive of the weld area, and not at the corners) | |||
Worner Radii: | Flash: | ||
The radius of any outside corner shal not exceed three times the specified wall thickness | Structural tubing usually is supplied flash-in. The height of the flash will vary with the wall thickness of the tube. |

The above table is based on the best known and most widely used formula for calculating the bursting pressure of tubes, namely Barlowís:
P=2St/D
P = Internal pressure in p.s.i. S = Fiber stress of tube in p.s.i. t = Wall thickness in inches D = Outside diameter in inches
The table (S = 10,000) affords easy calculations with appropriate multipliers shown below. For theoretical bursting pressures, use tensile values. For theoretical bulging pressures, use yield values. Working pressures will vary depending upon safety factors required for environmental conditions involved as determined by your design engineer and appropriate codes. | Material | Tensile (Multiplier) | Yield (Multiplier) |
---|---|---|---|
6061-T6 Aluminum | 42,000 psi (x 4.2) | 35,000 psi (x 3.5) | |
